{GIVEAWAY} Taming wild hair

Thank-you everyone for your patience while I have been sick. I'm still sick (and armed with antibiotics and painkillers) but I decided to get this giveaway underway anyway! (lots of -way words in that sentence!LOL) so no fancy pics, no fancy spiel.

Up for grabs is a Johnsons Detangling spray (as reviewed in this post here) and a hair accessory holder (like above but A4 size- with larger buttons for holding elastics- and you choose the fabric from a selection).

I want to make this an easy giveaway so all you have to do is enter via the Rafflecopter widget below and leave a comment. You can increase your chances by also liking the twenty5seven FB page but that isnt necessary to enter.

And don't forget to check out the product review http://blog.spottyowldesign.com/2012/05/get-knotted.html  there's even a dorky video and you can hear my british/aussie hybrid accent that apparently makes me sound like a New Zealander! :o)

Good luck!

I have returned!!

I know it has been a long time between posts. I'm going to make up for it with a super-stuffed post now!

I've spent the last few weeks slowly working on my sewing space (which is also my office and also the playroom). We now have a three metre long desk so I have loads of space to spread out when marking out patterns or switching between my sewing machine and overlocker. We still need some more storage- pinboards, shelves, that kind of thing. But it's coming together well.

I also bought some coreflute from the hardware store so that I can store my fabric better. Not finished but definitely an improvement.

Here's an (embarrassing) before shot. I think this was around Christmas when we did a chuck-and-shut on this room. There are two boxes of decorations that I can see. You can see we have moved the cupboard now.

I'm also hosting a Johnsons Baby Bath Pack giveaway on my personal blog Twenty5seven. It includes some of the products seen here (the bedtime bath and bedtime lotion) and a hooded towel. It opens tomorrow and runs for three weeks so head over and enter!!

And lastly, the reason I'm ending the giveaway before September is that I'll be very busy in September as I am once again going to be a sponsor of the Cloth Nappy Hunt
Phew! How's that for an update?

Get knotted!

We've been using the Johnson & Johnson 'no more tangles' range for a month now, click on the video below to see what Bella and I think about it.

Ok, you can't access Youtube at work? My accent is grating? Here's a brief rundown without the clip.

Firstly, I haven't done product reviews before because it's not something that was ever an aim. I don't have a   review policy or a mediakit. But when I was contacted by a company representing Johnson & Johnson, it seemed like a natural fit. I'm a Mum, I have a website/blog that's full of baby and kids products and, more importantly, our house is already full of J&J products. See below- this is just what I pulled out of Ashley's change table... there's also wipes,Junior shampoo and Strawberry detangling spray.

The products I was sent to try were the 'no more tangles' shampoo, conditioner and detangling spray. The shampoo and detangling spray are 'no more tears' too!

The shampoo and conditioner have more 'grownup' packaging and scent than the Junior products. The shampoo has a texture that reminded me of the shampoo my hairdresser uses.... it's not as lather-y as a lot of shampoos and felt really nice.

A note on the shampoo (not the spray or conditioner)... as I mentioned in the videoclip.... here in Australia and several other countries there are small amounts of chemicals used which are banned in other countries. There's a link below for you to read about it and then another link with Johnson&Johnsons response, indicating that the levels are low and safe but Johnson&Johnson are working to remove those chemicals from all J&J products globally in response to pressure from consumers.

My favourite product is definitely the detangling spray. My hair is frizzy and dry and gross. If I'm in a rush or whatever, I've been spraying the detangling spray into my hair to eleviate the frizz and it's been working, yay, without making my hair oily or crunchy, double yay. I know I should fix the actual problem but this bandaid solution works nicely for now ;o) The lid also twists to lock (found out accidentally) so it doesnt accidentally spray everywhere in a drawer or when the kids get hold of it.

And... it works!!

See below, a picture of Bella's unbrushed hair when she's woken up. I sprayed the hair, started from the bottom and brushed out the little tangles. There was a fairly large knot on one side (on the righthandside in the pic below) so I gave that a direct spritz, stuck the brush right into the knot and slowly combed downwards and it came loose.

Another thing I love... the value for money. The other detangling spray is $3.33 per 100ml, this one is $2.37 per 100ml AND being a bigger size, you don't need to worry about replacing it as often! Also... see how it has no cap to lose? That's because of the twist-lock top I mentioned earlier.

So yes, I am very happy that I was made aware of these products and supplied with them to try out. I'll definitely be a continuing customer.

Stay tuned for details of my giveaway.

mealplanning OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And some more !!!!!!!!!!! for good measure!

Did anyone else ogle this meal planning system over at IheartOrganizing?

I really, really want to do this now! And despite a LOT of preparation to set up, I think it would eb really easy to use and maintain... the system even allows for new recipes, eating out and leftovers! The only difference I would make is for the side dishes (the little red magnets)... this system uses a code for what kind of sidedish (veggies, salad, rice etc) and i think i would either want to use a full-size red magent that says "w/ rice" or "w/salad" etc or just write that in with whiteboard marker.

Now to hunt down one of those magentic whiteboards that doesn't cost the earth!

St Patrick's Day

The Mister was out with the car yesterday so I picked up the girls from daycare and we walked home. I found out (at 5:55pm mind you) that they're supposed to wear something green for St Patrick's Day activities today.

Miss Nearly-2 doesn't own any green clothes and I didn't have enough green fabric to make a whole dress so I made this:

Unfortunately, somehow, in doing so, I managed to snap BOTH needles on my overlocker, d'oh! Just when I had a big weekend of sewing planned. Looks like an early-morning trip to Spotlight is in order!

March 2012 Cloth Nappy Hunt

Hello would-be hunters!

We all know that I love the Cloth Nappy Hunt and have sponsored every hunt since I opened my business and was a hunter for several hunts before that.

It is a wonderful event that provides hours of (addictive) enjoyment, loads of great prizes and brings business owners together with a real sense of community (unlike FB which can be very competitive).

The Cloth Nappy Hunt organisers work tirelessly on the hunt- on top of having day jobs, a business and a family to look after. For this hunt, they just don't have the time to devote to the hunt and it just can't run without their expertise and hours and hours of hard work.

The hunt will be back in September 2012 but in the meantime, some of the would-be sponsors are offering some fantastic discounts to would-be hunters.

Here at Spotty Owl Design, we are offering 20% off all orders.

For more information, a list of participating businesses and the all-important discount code, please head to

Peace, quiet and rest is her message,
Tired scenery heeds her call;
This gracious lady is Autumn,
Loveliest season of all.
-Pamela Summers

I like Autumn, it’s the season of winding down, contemplation, slowness, stillness. The air gets colder, crisper, fresher and we start to rely on our old comforts- warm socks, soft blankets, hearty meals, fireplaces, hot drinks.  But there’s still plenty of warm sunshine, soft dry grass and birds singing.

I can’t believe it is here though. And if it wasn’t a leap year, we’d already be onto March 2nd! This year is going so fast!  Somebody should do something about that. Start a petition, maybe? Build a time machine?

In fact, it’s racing so quickly that I only just realised today that we’re due our next public holiday this weekend! An extra day in the month AND a long weekend within just a few days of each other? Hallelujah! No excuses not to cross all those pesky jobs off my to-do list!

I’ve been doing quite a bit of sewing this week and I don't think I've shared any pics.
